Connecting Ore Residents to Their Heritage
The Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is embarking on an exciting new initiative in collaboration with Groundwork South aimed specifically at engaging the community of Ore. Dubbed ‘The World According to Ore’, this project seeks to bring the museum’s rich collection and local heritage directly to the doorstep of residents. Kicking off in the spring of this year, this project is designed to run for at least a year, with hopes for extension depending on available funding.
Empowering Local Communities Through Arts and Heritage
Cllr Julia Hilton, the lead for regeneration, culture, and tourism at Hastings Borough Council, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “We are excited that Ore’s communities, who may not have had the chance to engage with Hastings Museum and Art Gallery before, will get the opportunity to explore the museum’s collection on their doorstep,” stated Hilton. This project aims to include a variety of engaging activities for residents of all ages. From exploring the landscape of Hastings Country Park to creating sculptures from natural and recycled materials, the activities promise to foster a deeper appreciation for local history and the environment.
What’s In Store for the Future
Philippa Beagley from Groundwork South will lead the outreach activities, which aim to enrich the connection between the museum and Ore residents. “Groundwork South are excited to be working with the museum to develop new partnerships and new ways of working,” she noted. This initiative not only showcases the museum's collection but also focuses on collaborative creation with the community, ensuring that the efforts resonate well within the locality.
A Unique Opportunity to Engage
For those residing in Ore, this is an ideal opportunity to engage with local history and arts in a manner that is both accessible and compelling. Shelley Pletsch, Hastings and Rother Programme Manager for Groundwork South, emphasised their commitment to the community: “We love working with our local communities and really value this opportunity to work with local residents.”
Residents interested in participating can keep an eye on the Hastings Museum & Art Gallery’s website and social media for upcoming events and activities. This project, not only supported by public funding from Arts Council England, stands out as a beacon of community-driven engagement and learning.
